A Chesterfield furniture is durable
How long does a Chesterfield last?
A Chesterfield furniture is durable, comfortable and versatile. But how long does such a sofa or chair last? Good question.
The lifespan of an 'ordinary' sofa is around 5 - 10 years. However, a Chesterfield sofa lasts much longer. We are talking here about a real, original Chesterfield. Because there is a lot of imitation on the market of inferior material that breaks quickly. An authentic Chesterfield, on the other hand, is specially made for a long lifespan. Only first-class high-quality materials are used during production. This applies to the frame, but also to the upholstery and the details such as the feet and the nails. Combined with the traditional craftsmanship and the pure craftsmanship of the craftsmen, this all results in a strong and durable product.
A real Chesterfield can last a long time, 15 -20 years is not unusual with normal private use. They are also very popular as second-hand vintage furniture, precisely because of their strong and lived-in appearance and the warm atmosphere they radiate. Important for the long lifespan is that you take good care of the furniture. That is to say: regularly and with the right means. Leather is strong, but it does require some extra attention to keep it well nourished. This prevents cracks and keeps the color beautiful and vibrant. Here are a few handy maintenance tips:
Regularly clean your furniture, at least 4 times a year and re-grease it for optimal condition. This is especially true for light-colored leather. It takes a bit of time, but it is really worth it! Wipe away spilled liquids as soon as possible and brush away crumbs etc. regularly. Make sure that children or pets cannot cause damage with toys or sharp nails. There are various maintenance products available on the market. Chesterfield.com has developed a special Leather Care Bio Créme which it gives with its furniture. This is a cleaning and maintenance product in one, easy to use and with an excellent result. That saves a lot of work! The créme can also be ordered separately.
Accidents happen - if there is a stain on your leather sofa (or another model), try to remove it with a well-wrung, damp cloth. Then gently dry with a soft cloth. Unfortunately, you will not be able to get rid of all stains this way. Sometimes people choose a soap with a mild soap. But be careful, what exactly is a 'mild' soap? Try to determine the nature of a stain and rather seek expert advice. An old, deeply embedded grease stain, for example, requires a different treatment than an ink stain. In any case, never use scouring agents and/or cleaning agents with aggressive chemicals such as ammonia or bleach. These often cause irreparable damage to your beautiful Chesterfield.
Have a protective lacquer layer applied to your new furniture in the factory. It works protecting, dirt-repellent and prevents discoloration. Optionally, you can also have it impregnated fire retardant. This is standard for The Royal Collection from Chesterfield.com, for furniture from the other collections this can be requested.
More information about leather types such as aniline leather, semi-aniline leather and pigmented leather can be read in our knowledge base on www.chesterfield.com. Also interesting in this context is the article about which leather is used for our patchwork. It is a very special technique of leather processing, with a beautiful playful effect.
Finally. The lifespan of a Chesterfield is largely dependent on the materials used and the way in which they are processed. If you want to enjoy your Chesterfield sofa or chair for a long time, choose an original Chesterfield. Then you are assured of high quality. For the best price we advise you to compare different suppliers and also pay attention to the warranty and warranty conditions offered. These can differ considerably per supplier. And - again - be on the lookout for fake Chesterfields which are much cheaper, but cannot be adjusted to your wishes and are much more susceptible to wear and loss of comfort.
